6° of Separation, The Upstairs Gallery Titirangi

August, 2021

This exhibition has been created to celebrate the diversity and connectivity of Upstairs Art Gallery. Every artist has been invited through having some connection to the gallery and/or its community.

Grace’s work is an exploration of the natural world, particularly with a focus upon oceanic and floral motifs. The work ‘Twist’ 1 - 3 is inspired by the 1960’s era of fashion, style and colour palette as well as texture. A recurring shape in the current work is influenced by coral forms. This is hand drawn and then modelled by a 3D printer. The result combines the relationship between nature and artifice.

Grace encourages the observer to notice the finer details that may be easily overlooked. There is an abundance of opportunity to see patterns, ubiquitously and without tribulation seemingly, if one was to take a moment to observe. On the surface at least, it appears that beauty and symmetry is taken for granted. One can sometimes take the beauty and symmetry of the minutiae for granted.
