The Estuary Art and Ecology Awards are Aotearoa’s only annual contemporary art awards with ecology at the core. Artists are invited to research and respond to the Tāmaki Estuary, explore the ecological value of this vital waterway, and encourage action against its pollution. Finalists will be exhibited in the Malcolm Smith Gallery at UXBRIDGE Arts and Culture and winning artworks will be intelligent and innovative responses to ecology in the field of contemporary art.
I received a Merit Award for my entry Tide Line, eloquently judged by Shannon Novak.
Tide Line - “Comprised of individually crafted and glazed ceramics, hung on the wall. All based on items I found, have seen or collected in, and around the Tāmaki Estuary and other shorelines around Auckland. My aim was to capture and replicate the actual size, intricate details, forms and textures of the objects and encapsulate them as ‘specimens,’ saved in time. As, over time, the natural colours and textures tend to fade away, are buried in the sand, or lost in the tides. The circular shape of the display is a nod to museum artifacts/specimens, and a metaphor for the circle of life. In museums, species are preserved and displayed delicately, with definitive purpose in an unnaturally perfect way. Completely juxtaposed to nature itself.”
